Gongchun (also known as Gong Chun) is hailed as the founding father of Yixing Zisha art. His iconic Gongchun Teapot, also called the Burl Teapot, is the first documented artistic Zisha teapot in history, regarded as a “living fossil” of Zisha culture.
Gongchun was a young servant to the scholar Wu Yishan. While studying at Jinsha Temple, he secretly learned pottery from monks. Using fine clay settled from monks’ washing water, he modeled the teapot after the gnarled burls of an ancient ginkgo tree. He pioneered the clay slab joining technique (a national intangible cultural heritage), hand-shaping a vessel with natural folds and faint fingerprint textures. Fired to a deep chestnut hue like ancient bronze, it became an instant legend.
