This Hantang Shipiao Teapot is an iconic low-profile variant of the classic Yixing stone ladle teapot, refined and finalized by Master Xu Hantang—a prestigious National Master of Arts and Crafts, and the foremost disciple of the legendary Zisha master Gu Jingzhou—building on the foundation of Gu’s Shipiao design. It stands as a masterpiece that perfectly blends heritage with innovation, widely known in the industry as the Hantang Ladle.

Rooted in the stone ladle teapots dating back to Su Shi of the Northern Song Dynasty, and evolved through the low Shipiao of Chu Ming and Gu Jingzhou’s refined version, Master Xu introduced a pivotal upgrade: replacing the conventional single-curve spout with an elegant three-curved pigeon-beak spout, which ensures smoother water flow and adds rhythmic sophistication to the overall silhouette. The flush-fitting lid seals tightly, topped with a rounded bridge knob; three sturdy nubs support the body stably. The spout, knob and handle form an immaculate straight line, with a low center of gravity that exudes both strength and gentle grace, described as “well-proportioned, plump and lustrous”.
Traditionally crafted from premium raw purple clay, it is also available in cinnabar (red) clay, duan clay and Jiangpo clay. Hand-beaten into shape using time-honored techniques, it features a fine, breathable clay body and a subtle, natural luster achieved by masterful finishing. As it is used and cared for over time, it develops a warm, translucent patina that deepens its beauty.
With a typical capacity of 180–220ml, it is ideal for gongfu tea preparation. Purple clay models excel with aged ripe Pu’er and dark teas; cinnabar clay versions excel at retaining fragrance, making them perfect for high-aroma oolongs such as Wuyi Rock Tea and Fenghuang Dancong. It also works beautifully with white tea and black tea for daily brewing. More than just a functional tea vessel, it is a highly sought-after contemporary collectible among Zisha connoisseurs, boasting both practical utility and significant artistic value.
