It originated as the “Half Melon Teapot” crafted by Yang Pengnian, then was refined and renamed in the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty through the legendary collaboration between the scholar-official Chen Hongshou (also known as Chen Mansheng, a leading figure of the Xiling Eight Masters) and the master potter Yang Pengnian.

It carries profound Eastern philosophy: “Full moon wanes, half moon endures”, symbolizing longing for reunion, peace and lasting well-being. This teapot has long been a favorite among gongfu tea enthusiasts and cultural connoisseurs.

The teapot features a plump, inverted half-moon/hemispherical body with seamless, flowing curves. It has a perfectly fitting flush lid, usually topped with a small bridge-shaped or round bead knob. The short curved spout delivers a smooth, clean pour, while the rounded loop handle fits comfortably in the palm. Traditionally made from purple clay, pure clay or cinnabar (red) clay, it is hand-beaten into shape with a fine, breathable body that develops a warm, subtle luster with regular use. Typically 150–200ml in capacity, it excels at brewing high-aroma oolongs like Wuyi Rock Tea, Fenghuang Dancong and Tieguanyin, as well as aged ripe Pu’er and white tea, making it an elegant and practical centerpiece for any tea table.
