The Pan Teapot is a timeless round Yixing Zisha teapot, named after Pan Shicheng (courtesy name Deyu), a prominent merchant and the Salt Transport Commissioner of Guangdong and Guangxi during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (early 19th century), as recorded in Records of Yangxian Zisha Teapots.
With his ancestral roots in Putian, Fujian—a region steeped in gongfu tea culture—Pan commissioned teapots exclusively in Yixing, primarily crafted from cinnabar clay (red clay). These teapots featured a raised seal-character “Pan” inscribed on the lid rim, with no marks on the base. Initially used for personal tea drinking and as prestigious gifts for official and business connections, the Pan Teapot later became a staple in the gongfu tea circles of southern Fujian and Chaoshan. It also evolved into a meaningful dowry item for brides in the region, symbolizing prosperity, family harmony, and the virtues of a good spouse and mother.
