The Xiaoying Teapot (formerly known as Three-Line Teapot, Xiaoying Jar Teapot; also called Laughing Cherry Teapot) is a classic round and plain-style Yixing Zisha teapot. Its prototype derives from ancient ying-shaped storage jars. It was formally designed and finalized by Pan Chunfang and Xu Chengquan under the guidance of Zhu Kexin in 1962, and later refined and elevated by Gu Jingzhou, becoming a benchmark work of contemporary Zisha ware. The name is said to come either from the literary allusion “Yingning’s smile dispels all sorrows” in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, or from the knob’s shape resembling a budding cherry blossom, symbolizing peace, open-mindedness, and harmony in diversity.

It features a plump, flattened-round body with prominent shoulders and a slender neck, gentle yet powerful curved belly lines, and a tightly fitting pressed lid. The rim of the mouth, lid edge, and shoulder ring line form an elegant “three-line” echo. The three-curved spout is extended and robust, ensuring smooth water flow and clean cutoff. The ruyi-shaped loop handle has an elegant curve for a comfortable grip, and the bud-like round knob is delicate and exquisite, supported by a stable ring foot. Commonly crafted from purple clay, vermilion clay and pure clay, it offers excellent air permeability, heat retention and aroma concentration, ideal for Wuyi rock tea, Fenghuang Dancong, ripe Pu’er and other teas.
