The Longdan Teapot (also known as Dragon Egg Teapot, a classic plain round-style Yixing Zisha teapot with ancient Ming Dynasty origins) is traditionally attributed to Gu Dasbin, the grand master of Zisha craftsmanship. It was clearly documented in Ode to Yangxian Teapots by Wu Meiding during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty: “Round as a pellet, slightly elongated in form, it is the Dragon Egg.” It is one of the earliest finalized Zisha teapot shapes, also called Longdan Jar Teapot. It is often distinguished from the short-round Wendan Teapot, symbolizing blessings from the dragon, warding off evil spirits, and a life of completeness and smoothness.
It features a vertically oval, egg-shaped body—plump, solid, with seamless, angular-free flowing lines that look like they were crafted in one single stroke. The flush-cut lid fits perfectly tight. The round bead or flattened round knob is delicate and compact. The short straight conical spout delivers a brisk water flow with a clean cutoff. The large curved inverted handle fits comfortably in the palm for a stable grip. Most are designed with a ring foot for excellent stability. Traditionally hand-beaten and shaped from purple clay, vermilion clay and pure clay, it boasts outstanding air permeability and aroma retention. Ideal for oolong tea, raw Pu’er, ripe Pu’er, black tea and many other teas, it combines a primitive, naive charm with high practicality, making it perfect for both daily brewing and collection.
