Different Yixing Zisha clays carry unique textures, mineral composition and flavour-bringing properties. Choosing the right clay for your tea can greatly elevate your gongfu tea experience. Below is a practical pairing guide for popular Zisha clay varieties.
Purple Clay (Zi Ni 紫泥) The most versatile classic Zisha clay. Moderate porosity, steady heat retention.
✅ Best paired with: Pu-erh tea, dark tea, aged oolong, ripe pu-erh. Suitable for most teas, great for beginners.
Red Clay (Zhu Ni 朱泥) Fine and dense clay, high heat retention, fast warming. It brings out bright, rich aroma.
✅ Best paired with: Taiwan high mountain oolong, tieguanyin, phoenix dancong. Not ideal for heavily fermented aged teas.
Duan Clay (Duan Ni 段泥) Light-coloured clay with relatively high porosity. It presents clean and fresh tea taste.
✅ Best paired with: green tea, light oolong, white tea, raw pu-erh. Note: Duan clay may stain easily with dark, heavy teas.
Jiangpo Clay (降坡泥) Blended clay with balanced texture, combining features of purple clay and duan clay. Rich mineral notes.
✅ Best paired with: dancong oolong, raw pu-erh, medium-fermented oolong.
Green Grey Clay (青灰泥) Stable clay with moderate air permeability, brings out the layered flavour of tea.
✅ Best paired with: raw pu-erh, aged oolong.
Always dedicate one teapot to one type of tea if possible, to avoid flavour cross-contamination. Clean your teapot with plain water only after brewing to preserve the natural patina.
